Last week we talked about getting ready for New Year’s resolutions and I shared a few simple physical strategies to make success easier:
- Start your day with a protein-rich breakfast
- Walk 8–10,000 steps daily
- Strength train twice per week
- Focus on mostly whole, minimally processed foods
This week, I want to shift gears and talk about the mental side.
Let’s be honest — staying locked in is much easier when there’s a big, immovable deadline. Training for the Olympics? Easy. Preparing for the Super Bowl? No problem.
But what if your goal is simply to be fit because it’s the right thing to do?
No stage. No photo shoot. No countdown clock.
I deeply admire those people. They’re not chasing an event — they’re changing a lifestyle.
People often ask how I’ve stayed consistent for so long. The answer is simple, but not always easy: I have a big “why”… actually, many of them.
I think of it like a mental Rolodex (yes, I know… do people even know what that is anymore?). When motivation dips, I flip through and pull out the reason I need in that moment.
I want to be healthy for my wife. When I said “I do,” protecting and serving became part of that promise — especially after all Melissa has been through for our family.
I want to be healthy for my children. I know I’m in the last third of my life, and I want to stay vibrant for as long as possible.
I want to be around for my grandchildren. My grandson and I just had the best spring and summer together — and I’m not done teaching him shenanigans. My goal? To walkinto my granddaughter’s high school commencement someday, not be wheeled in.
And yes — sometimes my Rolodex pulls out less positive cards. Like the kid who bullied me in junior high. If reflecting on that fuels my drive to honor all my other reasons… I’m perfectly okay with that.
Life constantly gives us reasons not to take care of ourselves. Stack your environment with reminders of why you should.
Your New Year’s resolutions will be far more powerful when they’re anchored to a meaningful “why.”
If you need help uncovering yours, I’m always here. 😊💪🏼
