Quick question…
When most people want to lose fat, what’s the first thing they add?
For most people, the answer is simple: more cardio.
More running.
More treadmill time.
More high-energy group fitness classes.
But here’s the surprising part…
That approach can actually make fat loss harder over time.
Now don’t get me wrong—cardio burns calories and it absolutely has value for heart health. But when fat loss is the goal, relying heavily on cardio can quietly backfire.
Why?
Because cardio teaches your body to become efficient. The more efficient your body becomes, the fewer calories it needs to do the same work. Over time, that can slow the progress you’re chasing.
And just to clear something up…
Running is cardio.
The treadmill is cardio.
And yes—your group fitness class is still cardio… even if you’re holding dumbbells.
If your heart rate stays elevated and the goal is constant movement, your body largely treats it as cardio.
Strength training sends a very different signal.
When you lift weights with the goal of getting stronger, your body adapts by building muscle. Muscle is metabolically active tissue—it burns calories around the clock, even while you sleep.
I’ve seen this play out many times with my clients.
Women who struggled to maintain their weight eating 1,200 calories suddenly started losing fat while eating 1,800–2,000 calories once proper strength training became the focus.
Same person.
Different strategy.
Completely different results.
Another myth worth clearing up?
“Toning” isn’t really a thing. Muscles either grow or they shrink. That lean, firm look people want comes from building a small amount of muscle while reducing body fat.
Ironically, many of the exercises people were once told to avoid are the exact ones that create the results they’ve been chasing all along.
