“But Dave, I eat healthy when I go out to eat.”
I hear that all the time — and honestly, I say it too.
Melissa and I went out for Valentine’s Day. Nothing fancy. Just a place we enjoy. I ordered what most people would call a pretty healthy meal: two crabcakes, a baked potato with a little butter, a Caesar salad, and yes… a vodka-grapefruit cocktail (okay, maybe two 😆). No appetizer. No dessert.
When I estimated the calories later, that one meal came in just under 1,500 calories.
Here’s what made that eye-opening. I eat close to 3,000 calories a day because I’ve intentionally built my metabolism. That dinner was literally half my daily intake — and I wasn’t even that full.
The night before, I ate at home. A big, balanced meal, about 1,000 calories… and I was stuffed. Same person. Same stomach. Totally different result.
And the next morning? Both Melissa and I woke up with a little extra inflammation — achy hands, stiff joints. Not horrible. Just noticeable. That wasn’t coincidence. That was restaurant food.
I love eating out. I love date nights. But eating out is not the same as eating in.
If you’re stuck… if progress feels harder than it should… I’d challenge you to simply reduce how often you eat meals you didn’t prepare. If you eat out every workday lunch, try cutting it in half. The worst thing that happens? You learn something incredibly valuable about what’s been holding you back.
That’s not restriction — that’s information. 😊💪🏼
