The 85% Rule: How to make it work for you

You’ve probably heard me say it countless times: our health and fitness results are 70% nutrition. But what if I told you that you can get great results by being only 85% awesome with your nutrition? Wait… what does that even mean?

 

I’ve heard experts say that you only need to be 85% on point with your nutrition to see great results. But let’s be honest, what does 85% really mean? Is it being dialed in 85% of the days? 85% of your calories? 85% of your meals? 85% whole foods? Who knows!

What I do know is that you don’t need to be perfect to achieve your goals. In fact, striving for perfection is usually a recipe for frustration. And what does “perfect” even mean? Let’s flip that around—what if you can only afford to be off 15% of the time?

Let’s dig into that.

Last week, one of my one-on-one clients had to take their spouse to the hospital. They told me they were off their nutrition plan for four days. Yes, life happens, and taking care of our family is a top priority. (Although, great nutrition does help us take care of our family better!)

But let’s do the math. If they were “off” for four days and perfect for the next four days, they’d be sitting at 50%. It might take four solid weeks to offset those four off days!

I worry that when people hear they only need to be dialed in 85% of the time, they think that means 85% of the days when it’s easy. But that 85% includes weekends, hospital visits, taking care of kids, forgetting to food prep, or even a flat tire. It also includes date nights, vacations, and, like me this past weekend, a concert in Atlantic City with my sons and a few adult beverages.

Here’s how I handle it: I aim to be as dialed in as humanly possible from Sunday through Friday. This approach allows me to enjoy that 15% of indulgence, whether it’s a date night with my beautiful wife or dealing with life’s unexpected challenges.

I choose to skip “Muffin Monday.”

I choose to pass on the pizza and bagels at the office.

That’s how I handle the 85% rule. How about you?
