Happy Mindset Monday! 😎

Being in a calorie deficit does not drive fat loss exclusively. It drives tissue loss in general.

Yes, that includes fat, and muscle, and connective tissue, and even bone density. All of those things are on the chopping block when you are in a caloric deficit. (or even not eating a healthy manner, in general.)

Many people come to me with a goal of wanting to lose weight. Normally, weight loss is not the actual goal – fat loss is!

So how do we lose fat but retain muscle? And why is that important?

Let’s start with the second part first.

For one, muscle is vastly more metabolic than fat. The more muscle we carry, the better off we are from a metabolic standpoint. Carrying a little bit more muscle will have us burning more calories every minute of each and every day - even while we sleep!

Have you heard the phrase “skinny fat”?  That’s when our weight loss protocol has us losing muscle, as well as fat. In fact, dieting in this manner can have us actually INCREASE our percentage of body fat. (more on that in the future video.)

So how do we lose fat, and retain muscle?

Lifting weights and eating protein are two key elements.

Want to lose weight? Eat less.

Want to lose fat? Eat less, prioritize protein, and lift weights!

✅ Consume about 1 g of protein per pound of body weight

✅ Spread that protein rather evenly across the day

✅ Lift weights hard

✅ Sleep 7–9 hours a night

And you WIN!

(please notice that I did not mention “extensive cardio”, which is a muscle killer!)

Class dismissed! 🤓👨🏼‍🎓
