I write this and ponder as I’m visiting my 92-year-old mother in Florida. She is talking a lot about “retaining her independence”. And to the best of my ability – I get it. ❤️
As we traverse the journey of life, it's essential to contemplate our future selves, especially envisioning our 85+ year old versions. This introspection prompts us to assess how our current lifestyle choices will impact our long-term well-being.
Many of us often get caught up in the immediate future, seldom considering life beyond it. However, imagining ourselves at 85 or older can serve as a powerful catalyst for making more informed decisions regarding our health and overall quality of life.
When reflecting on our 85+ year old selves, it's imperative to move beyond mere survival and envision the type of life we aspire to lead. What activities do we envision enjoying? What level of independence do we strive to maintain?
Our current choices significantly influence our health outcomes in older age, with nutrition playing a pivotal role. Adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can help ward off chronic illnesses and sustain vitality as we age.
Equally vital is engaging in regular physical activity for healthy aging. Incorporating exercises that promote strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health can prolong longevity and improve overall well-being.
Additionally, nurturing robust social connections is crucial for mental and emotional health, particularly in later years. Cultivating meaningful relationships and remaining active in our communities contribute to a fulfilling life in our senior years.
While genetics play a role in our longevity, lifestyle choices wield significant influence over our health span—the number of years we spend in good health. By making informed decisions today, we increase the likelihood of experiencing a vibrant and active life well into our 80s and beyond.
