I don’t want to lift

I don’t want to lift

“I don’t want to lift weights because I don’t want to look like Arnold.”

Or, “ I don’t want to get bulky.”

Happy Mindset Monday! 😎

I hear it from both men and women, mostly females.

“I don’t want to lift weights because I don’t want to look like Arnold.”

Or, “ I don’t want to get bulky.”

So, your concerned that, after a few months of lifting your purple and pink dumbbells, that you’re going to wake up one morning with the body of 25-year-old Arnold – one of the most genetically gifted human beings to ever walk the planet, who devoted every moment of every day to his body and sport, who was literally the number one professional bodybuilder for a decade, who spent his life experimenting with nutrition and training techniques, who job it was to build that body by focusing on rest and recovery, and training and nutrition, AND who is using performance enhancing drugs?  Yes, steroids.

You really think that? 🤔

First of all, women do not have the hormonal profile to ever put on that type of muscle. (With or without performance enhancing drugs.) So, Melissa will never look like The Rock.

Recently on Facebook, I saw a 60-year-old man post “I don’t want to get bulky”.

I asked him how much bulk (muscle) he thought a 60-year-old man could add in the course of a year. I never got an answer.

The answer is probably zero. It’ll be very difficult for most men or women to add muscle as they age.

If you do everything right, maybe someone over the age of 40 could add about 4 pounds of muscle per year.

“If that’s it, Dave, why even bother trying?”

After age 30, you begin to lose as much as 3% to 5% per decade. Most will lose about 30% of their muscle mass during their lifetimes.

(BTW - under eating and / or too much cardio, of any type, will speed up that catabolic muscle loss process. 😳)

Let’s remember that muscle is vastly more metabolic than fat. The more muscle you carry, the more calories you will burn. That is why it is often harder to lose body fat as we get older – because we have lost muscle.

⬆️⬆️⬆️

Most of our weightlifting efforts – supported by great nutrition, rest, and recovery – is to preserve the remaining muscle that we have. In other words, don’t expect to be adding a lot, but let’s KEEP what we do have!

It will enhance so many things in your life. It can help drive you away from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and a litany of other health related diseases. As well as keeping your body composition (muscle to fat ratio) in check.  And that little bit of added strength will quite simply make the daily activities of life a little bit easier! 🏆

And yes, even making those fat loss goals easier to achieve! 🥇
