Happy Mindset Monday! 😎

This very important topic came up a few times over the last week. First, my disclaimer – I am not a doctor, this is not medical advice, and always follow the advice of your doctor.

Quick definition:

Osteoporosis - a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue, typically as a result of hormonal changes, or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D.

It often seems when someone is diagnosed with osteoporosis, they are told to increase their consumption of calcium.

This is very important to understand…

Supplementing with calcium without also engaging in weightlifting or progressive resistance training may not be effective for building stronger bones and could potentially lead to negative health outcomes.

Your bones need a REASON (a SIGNAL) to get stronger. Weightlifting – or progressive resistance – is that reason. Your bones will ADAPT to the forces of weightlifting by increasing their density.

Calcium will help create an environment for the bones to get stronger, but calcium alone will probably not rectify the situation.

In the 1990s there was a push for calcium supplementation to combat osteoporosis, yet without a calcium deficiency or the signaling to bones to strengthen from exercise, this strategy did not help build stronger bones.

Moreover, excessive calcium supplementation, particularly in women, resulted in too-high calcium levels, leading to calcium deposits that caused heart issues, ultimately worsening health. 

And here’s the good news… You don’t need to spend hours in the gym. Studies have shown that even two brief weightlifting sessions per week can have a dramatic and positive impact on osteoporosis! 😊

Thus, the implication is that without the stimulus provided by resistance exercises, calcium supplementation may not prevent or improve osteoporosis and could even pose other health risks due to potential over-supplementation.

I wanted to share this because…

💥 I am getting older.

💥 My loved ones are getting older.

💥 Osteoporosis seems to be impacting more and more of the people around me.

💥 We need to be in charge of our own health and fitness.

💥 And there really is a pretty simple fix to get us moving in the right direction!
