In fitness, there’s a dangerous trap that even seasoned “workout people” fall into: believing that more is always better. More weight, more burn, more sweat, more movement.
But here’s the truth: just because your body can tolerate stress doesn’t mean that stress is moving you closer to your goals. In fact, it might be pulling you further away—especially if your goals include long-term health, hormonal balance, or sustainability.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “Dave, I feel great—give me more!” And my response?
NOOOOOOO.
Because feeling good doesn’t mean your body needs extra. Often, it means we’ve found the sweet spot—the right mix of strength training, nutrition, recovery, and daily activity. That balance is what drives progress, not endless layers of stress disguised as “hard work.”
Don’t confuse an endorphin rush with actual results. Yes, a tough workout feels good in the moment, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s ideal for your body’s growth and recovery.
Here’s the mindset shift:
👉🏼 Doing great doesn’t mean you should do more.
👉🏼 Doing great means you’re doing the right amount for progress.
That’s where coaching makes all the difference. My job isn’t just to push people harder—it’s to help them do what matters most, based on where they are and where they want to go. And sometimes, the smartest move is restraint.
Because in health and fitness, tolerance isn’t progress. 💪🏼
